Beijing, the capital of China is one of its most ancient cities. Beijing is regarded to be one of the “Four Great Capitals of China”. The city had been a capital to almost all the major dynasties of China including Yan, Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.



The city of Beijing had been called by many names over the ages like Beiping, Peiping and Yanjing, and even as Khanbaliq by the Mongols. Presently, Beijing is referred to as the cultural, political and educational capital of China. With China emerging as a leader in the world economy, Beijing is gaining vast importance and has become the seat of a major world power. Beijing will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2008.



Beijing has many magnificent palaces, bazaars and museums which attract hordes of tourists every year. The great wall of China surrounds the city of Beijing. Beijing houses the famous, 'forbidden city', the kings palace at Beijing is the largest royal residence in the whole world. It also has several market places like the Liulichang, Xiushui Dongjie and the Panjiayuan Flea Market. The most famous monument of Beijing, probably is the Temple of Heaven.
