Tranquil Behai Park

The tranquil Behai Park is located in the center of the city of Beijing. For ages, it has served as the pleasure palace of emperors. Emperors of the Liao, Jin, Yuang, Ming and Qing dynasty have all spent their time at this park. At the time when the Jin dynasty ruled China, this park was known as the “Jade Islet Palace”.

They rested here while visiting the suburbs of their capital, Yanjing. The rulers of the Jin Dynasty created an imperial villa a the Behai park, incorporating the Behai lake and the Jade islet. Down the ages, the Yuan dynasty constructed a hall on the Jade islet, called the Palace of the Moon. The Ming and the Qing rulers continued on the process of beautification of the tranquil Behai Park, and built several structures to improve the facilities of the park. Under the reign of Emperor Shunzhi, the White Dagoba Temple was constructed at the site of the Palace of the Moon and the Jade Islet was renamed as the White Dagoba Hill.
The tranquil Behai Park has two gates. The front one is known as the Gate of received Light or Chenggunagmen which directly leads to the bridge of the Bridge of Everlasting Peace. The Southern Gate is known as Accumulated Emerald or Jicui and the Northern Piled up clouds or Duiyun. The best place to visit in the park is the White Dagoba Temple, which has an aesthetic collection of tantric sculptures.
