Silk Alley



The Silk Alley in Beijing is a modern shopping complex, which has been established in place of an old silk market. The Silk Street or Silk Alley ranks among the most popular tourist destinations of Beijing. With regards to its popularity it ranks just after the Great wall and the Palace Museum.



Even before the establishment of the new shopping complex, the place was known as Silk Alley because of the large market where Silken goods were sold.. The name continues till now. Before the demolition of the old silk market or silk alley, the place was locally known as Xiushuijie, the name has now been changed into Xiushui Dongjie. The old silk market at the Silk Alley was demolished in January 2006 and the new one was established in the month of March of the same year. The stores at Xiushui Dongjie are infamous all over the world for selling fake versions of apparels of famous brands. The comparatively low price of the garments attracts locals as well as visitors to this market.



Besides apparels, the products sold by the shops of Xiushui Dongjie include, Silk fabrics and fashion accessories like shoes, hats, belts, handbags and sportswear. The new market at the silk alley differ from the old one in the variety of products sold. This market also sells items associated with the past and antiquity of China. Tourist are attracted to Xiushui Dongjie because of the ancient Chinese handicrafts and antiques. Calligraphy, carpets, table cloths, paintings, hand-knit dresses, toys, trinkets and jewelery.
