Beijing

Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Beijing was earlier known by the name of Peking. The PRC is formed with four municipalities, of which Beijing is one. In terms of population, Beijing ranks as the third largest city in China. Beijing boasts of excellent communication links, with a number of roadways, railways as well as air ways crisscrossing it. A number of international flights to China fly over Beijing.

Beijing forms a part of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. During the time, when the People's Republic of China was founded, the municipality of Beijing did consist of only its urban area as well as the suburban areas surrounding it. The urban area had been sub divided into small administrative districts.

However, a number of regions have been included since then into the municipality of Beijing and the area has increased a lot since then. The city wall of Beijing was dismantled within three years from 1965 to 1969. The Ring Road lies in the area, where the wall used to be. Recently, the spread of the area of Beijing has brought to the fore problems, like that of urbanization, heavy traffic, air pollution, the loss of heritage of the city, as well as the problem of rural-urban migration.

Beijing can be better discussed under the following sub categories:
